At this time of the year, the Dallas Cowboys are usually knee-deep in drama heading into training camp. Whether it’s a contract dispute, a trade candidate, or just Jerry Jones’ lust for attention, they always find ways to stay relevant in the dead of the offseason. A few years ago, a contract holdout by CeeDee Lamb stole the headlines. Last season, it was trading Micah Parsons.
But this offseason, the drama that could’ve happened between Dallas and George Pickens hardly happened at all. The wideout accepted the franchise tag and attended mandatory minicamp, when it looked like that was up in the air. It’s been a super quiet offseason drama-wise.
It may feel different for the fans, but Dak Prescott believes the muted offseason has the team focused at the start of training camp. Here's what Prescott said in ESPN's Todd Archer's article.
“I just think the focus is in the right place. It's the Cowboys, right? Quiet, I don't know if that's ever the right word, but the focus is in the right place. Everyone has channeled for the same goal: To get better 1% each and every day."
Can the Cowboys use this unusual quiet offseason to back up optimism?
Last season was a rough one for the Cowboys. The defense was terrible immediately after trading Parsons away, and they got off to a 1-2-1 start. They battled to get back above .500 for most of the season, which they did momentarily in Week 13 after beating the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day. Only to stumble down the stretch, winning one of four, and finishing 7-9-1.
However, this offseason has seemed to inject newfound optimism into Dallas. They’ve made key free agent signings while retaining one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. It’s all made Dak and the boys feel motivated for 2026.
Taking care of in-house moves like Javonte Williams and Brandon Aubrey made fans confident that they could go for some outside help. They did, and struck gold with Jalen Thompson, Dee Winters and Rashan Gary.
Speaking of peaceful offseasons, it appears everybody is on the same page, too. Prescott publicly advocated for Pickens and said he had his back for any front office theatrics, but that wasn't needed this season.
Of course, this is all easy to say now during training camp. Once the real season starts, we’ll see if the changes to the team actually make a difference. But at the very least, player morale sounds different than past offseasons.
Going into the ‘26 season, the Cowboys are focused on putting their heads down, staying out of the spotlight, and showing the world that they’re a good team. After a disappointing end to last year, it’s clear that the goal is improvement, with their sights ultimately set on winning a Lombardi trophy.
Even though this is the offseason, they're always going to have the spotlight on them. They're the Dallas Cowboys, for crying out loud.
