Not so long ago, DeMarcus Lawrence was a fan favorite in Arlington. He was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise shaky Dallas Cowboys defense. Someone who could always be trusted to deliver when it mattered the most.
One year later, the fan base may not feel the same way. Lawrence ditched the Cowboys in free agency, and he then bashed the organization by claiming that he was never going to win a Super Bowl there:
“Dallas is my home,” Lawrence said when he signed with the Seahawks last year. “I made my home there, my family lives there. I’m forever gonna be there. But I know for sure I’m not gonna win a Super Bowl there.”
DeMarcus Lawrence hurts the Cowboys again
If that wasn't bad enough, he made sure the Seattle Seahawks could get another former Cowboys pass rusher. As Dante Fowler Jr. told the Seahawks' official website, his former Cowboys teammate had plenty to do with his decision to jump ship: “If you want to win a Super Bowl, you should come here,” Lawrence told Fowler.
Granted, the Cowboys looked more than ready to move on from Fowler this offseason, and, to be fair, Lawrence has won a Super Bowl in every season he's played for the Seahawks, so he's technically not wrong.
Nevertheless, if Dallas is truly his home, perhaps he'd like to stay on the fan base's good side. His comments about never winning a Super Bowl in Dallas were uncalled for, even if they were meant as a shot at Jerry Jones and not at his former teammates, the fan base, or the organization as a whole.
Professional athletes know better. They go through P.R. training, and he could've simply said that he still had plenty of love for Dallas, but the Seahawks gave him a better opportunity to win a championship at the moment.
Whatever the case, Lawrence may not care much about burning bridges with his previous team. He reportedly contemplated retirement last season, so he might be bracing for a farewell tour in 2026, with Fowler as his heir apparent.
The Cowboys, on the other hand, might be one of the most improved teams in the entire league last season, boasting a revamped defense with a new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, and, more importantly, guys who believe in the team and will do whatever it takes ot prove Lawrence wrong.
