Details Emerge From Mike McCarthy's Talks for New Job
By Jovan Alford
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has yet to find a new coaching job after parting ways with the Cowboys earlier this month.
McCarthy has only interviewed with two teams over the last couple of weeks – the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancies. McCarthy did not get the Bears’ job as they hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson last week.
However, McCarthy is still in contention for the Saints’ head coaching job. But he’s not the only candidate the Saints are considering as Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore, Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver, and New York Giants OC Mike Kafka.
Based on McCarthy’s coaching experience, it should be a no-brainer for the Saints. However, a couple of issues could lead to the former Cowboys head coach not getting the job.
On Tuesday, Senior NFL Insider Josina Anderson reported that the questions surrounding the former Dallas coach “have involved sentiments over the power structure and communication when it comes to football decisions, length of contract, etc.”
Anderson mentioned that McCarthy is accomplished and very tenured, which plays a role in this situation. However, she also highlighted that “a lot of league perspectives have been given as to what owner Gayle Benson should do when it comes to operations in her building in the future.”
Many fans on social media interpreted the last portion of Anderson’s tweet as Saints general manager Mickey Loomis being the problem.
Among all the head coaching vacancies this month, New Orleans was considered one of the least desirable jobs. Also, it didn’t help that Aaron Glenn did not take the job and decided to go to the New York Jets.
If the Saints believe McCarthy is the best guy for the job, then something must give. If not, then McCarthy could be out of coaching next season, which no one would’ve thought before the 2024 season.
