If the Dallas Cowboys are going to add to the corner position anytime soon, it doesn't appear veteran Stephon Gilmore at the top of the team's potential options. The former Cowboy remaining a free agent is a bit of a surprise considering his impressive resume.

Whether it is the veteran opting to wait for the perfect landing spot or a lack of opportunity is up for debate. Regardless, the veteran's chances of landing a deal anytime soon just took a major hit with the headline news surrounding former Green Bay Packers corner Jaire Alexander.

Alexander's Release Creates a Harder Road for Former Cowboy Stephon Gilmore

Green Bay opted to cut the veteran corner on Monday after years of frustrations. This completely shakes up the current free agent rankings at the position and pushes Gilmore's chances of signing back in Dallas or elsewhere in the wrong direction.

If the Cowboys or any other team are interested in adding to their secondary, it is impossible to believe Alexander isn't at the top of that list. The corner is going to become a prized summer free agent with the chance to create a huge market for the 2026 offseason

This is bad news for Gilmore and the remaining top defensive backs still sitting in free agency. Any team that needs to reinforce the position has every reason to want to target Alexander first. When the former Packer was healthy, he was one of the league's best corners. At only 28, there is reason to think that this version of the former Green Bay star can still be found in the right landing spot.

For the Cowboys, it is a noteworthy release that could give a talented defense an even higher ceiling. It is at least worth reaching out and finding if there is any mutual interest in joining the prestige franchise.

As exciting as this idea might be, it is a likely frustration to Gilmore and the rest of the top remaining defensive free agents. This release made sure that they will all continue to take a backseat until the new prized free agent finds a landing spot.
