Among the more interesting former Dallas Cowboys still searching for a landing spot is veteran corner Stephon Gilmore. It is a bit surprising when you consider the accomplished resumes and the defensive issues throughout the league. There is an easy argument to be formed that Gilmore not only could make the roster for a number of teams, but also work his way into a starting role if there is anything left in the tank. The defensive back has spent time with the Bills, Patriots, Panthers, Colts, Cowboys, and Vikings.
Gilmore's time in Dallas was back in the 2023 season under former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. There was a clear fit for the veteran, and it was a bit of a surprise when he wasn't brought back the following season. Joining forces with Brian Flores and the Vikings, the 2024 results didn't live up to expectations and left reason to wonder what the future held. However, this has often been the story of Gilmore's career, with consistent reinvention easing any concerns. Making it clear that if the defender wants to continue playing, there should be an opportunity.
Former Cowboys Veteran Corner Stephon Gilmore Continues Search for 2025 Landing Spot
Considering the lesser talents that have been signed, it is fair to wonder if Gilmore is holding out, hoping to land with a top contender. Already, the veteran has one Super Bowl ring, having won with Tom Brady's Patriots in Super Bowl 53 over the Los Angeles Rams. It seems very plausible that there is simply a level of patience now that the season has started, looking for a chance to earn that second championship.
Regardless, the Cowboys should be reaching out to explore any possibility of a reunion. The secondary has been ravaged by injuries and haunted by poor performance even when healthy. To put it simply, there is little case to be made that Gilmore isn't going to give you a chance to improve.
At the very least, it makes sense to bring in the defensive back for a workout and see if there is a possible match in the system of Matt Eberflus. Considering the brand of defense Eberflus installed appears to be inept, this is doubtful. Still, it is a potential move worth exploring and perhaps doing Gilmore's career a favor by breathing life back into his market.
No question, the defender deserves at least one more shot based on a truly impressive career that should give a number of teams a level of interest. Including Dallas, who simply can only get better in a secondary that is dealing with key injuries and issues that expose the need for key additions. Perhaps opening the door for a reunion and a resurgent season from the aging Gilmore.
