The Dallas Cowboys and the other 31 teams in the NFL are set to open training camp at various points next month, as we are inching closer to the start of the 2025 regular season.

The Cowboys have a lot of positive things to take away from OTAs and mandatory minicamp that they can build on during training camp in Oxnard, California. Dallas will open up camp on July 21, with rookies and vets reporting on the same day.

While the Cowboys get ready for an arduous few weeks of training camp, there are several former Dallas players still unsigned. That’s not a good sign, as most teams already have their 90-man rosters locked in.

Now, if you are a wide receiver like Amari Cooper or a running back like Ezekiel Elliott, your chances of getting signed by a new team aren’t at zero, given your resume and teams always needing another skill position player.

Ex-Cowboys QB Ben DiNucci Remains Unsigned Weeks Before Training Camp Begins

However, for former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci, he might be waiting a long time to get picked up, especially with guys like Carson Wentz, Tyler Huntley, and Desmond Ridder still unsigned as well.

DiNucci, Dallas’ former seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, was recently released by the New Orleans Saints on April 29, days after the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Saints signed the ex-Cowboys QB late last season in December to the practice squad, and gave him a futures deal at the end of the 2024 campaign. However, with former Cowboys OC Kellen Moore taking over as the head coach in New Orleans, he had different plans for the quarterback room, which didn’t involve DiNucci.

Before latching on with the Saints, DiNucci signed with the Buffalo Bills last summer after getting released by the Denver Broncos in May 2024. The former seventh-round pick only spent 15 days in Buffalo as they cut him at the end of the preseason.

With the Broncos, DiNucci joined them in May 2023 after a solid stint in the XFL with the Seattle Dragons. However, Denver cut DiNucci at the end of training camp that summer, but brought him to the practice squad at the start of December

The Broncos ultimately signed him to a futures contract at the end of the 2023 season, which allowed him to compete for a roster spot in training camp. But this did not happen.

As we previously discussed, DiNucci’s football journey took him to the XFL after the Cowboys cut him on August 29, 2022. The former JMU signal-caller played for the Sea Dragons, where he completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,671 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

He was one of the better QBs in the league, despite the high interception rate. The XFL gave him a chance to get more reps, as he threw 43 total passes in his Dallas career, all coming in 2020.

During the 2020 campaign, the rookie QB at the time appeared in three games (one start) as Dak Prescott suffered a brutal season-ending ankle injury. DiNucci completed 23-of-43 passes for 219 yards.

While he hasn’t had many opportunities to play in the NFL, the ex-Cowboys has still found a way to get himself on a roster. It will be interesting to see if any team gives him a call or if he has to wait until the start of the regular season, when teams start holding workouts.
