The Dallas Cowboys' tight end group enters the 2025 season with something to prove. Starting tight end Jake Ferguson is coming off a down year in 2024 and has vowed to bounce back in 2025. Moreover, there is a competition brewing for the TE No.2 spot between Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford.

Cowboys fans are hoping that each of the tight ends can help revitalize the room and give Dak Prescott reliable targets in 2025. That said, one former Cowboys tight end is without a job heading into training camp, Peyton Hendershot.

Former Cowboys TE Peyton Hendershot Remains a Free Agent Days Before Training Camp Starts

Hendershot signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2022. The former University of Indiana tight end impressed enough during training camp that year to make the Cowboys' final 53-man roster as the third tight end.

As a rookie, Hendershot recorded 11 catches on 16 targets for 103 yards and two touchdowns. While that's solid receiving production for a third tight end, he made more of an impact blocking, recording a 55.9 run blocking grade, according to PFF.

In 2023, the 26-year-old saw less production as a receiver, catching only four passes on seven targets for 38 yards. However, he did improve as a run blocker, finishing the year with a 56.9 grade in nine fewer games. Though Cowboys fans were fine with Hendershot being the third tight end, Dallas thought they could improve, so they released him.

Upon his release, Hendershot signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. During his year in Kansas City, he played in seven games, making five catches for 51 yards. Due to injuries and position on the depth chart, he was once again limited as a receiver.

Nevertheless, his blocking ability and potential upside as a receiver make it shocking he isn't signed yet. It will be interesting to see if someone brings him in at some point during training camp.
