Dallas Cowboys fans may briefly remember wide receiver Lucky Whitehead, who was with the team in 2015 and 2016.

An undrafted free agent, Whitehead played in 30 games across two seasons with the Cowboys, serving as their primary kick and punt return specialist. The 5-foot-9 wide receiver averaged 28.3 yards per kick return in his first season with the Cowboys. In 2016, Whitehead averaged 23.2 yards per kick return, but 7.8 yards per punt return – an improvement from his rookie year (5.8).

However, the Cowboys waived Whitehead in July 2017. He was picked up by the New York Jets, ut he never played a single game for them bouncing on and off the roster before closing the door on his NFL career.

After being a premier returner in the NFL, the veteran wide receiver took his talents to the CFL (Canadian Football League). Whitehead signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on May 9, 2019, where he became an instant star.

In his first season with the Blue Bombers, the former Cowboys wideout had 52 receptions for 521 yards and two touchdowns. Then on special teams, Whitehead had 596 kick return yards, including a 104-yard touchdown return.

After spending one season in Winnipeg, Whitehead joined the BC Lions in 2021, where he became a CFL and West Division All-Star. The veteran receiver played three seasons in British Columbia before returning to Winnipeg this summer.

Whitehead hasn’t done much in his return to the Blue Bombers, posting 14 receptions (16 targets) for 115 yards and a touchdown on offense. However, he’ll try to get the Blue Bombers back on top of the CFL world on Sunday in the 111th Grey Cup.

The Blue Bombers haven’t had much luck in the Grey Cup recently, losing the last two against the Montreal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts. Winnipeg is looking to get some revenge against the Argos on Sunday.

Winnipeg has appeared in the Grey Cup for the last two years, winning the CFL title in 2021 and 2019 over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Blue Bombers likely aren’t expecting Whitehead to do much on offense, but if he can flip field position on Sunday, it will go a long way in helping snap their two-game Grey Cup losing streak.

And will Whitehead earn himself another win? Oddsmakers think so, as the Bombers are massive 9.5-point favorites over the Argos.
