Former Rangers Pitcher Signs With White Sox
By Jack Gurley
On Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox announced they had signed veteran pitcher Martin Perez to a one-year $5 million deal. Perez had been somewhat of an afterthought this offseason, although he still put up solid numbers over the past couple of seasons.
Perez is coming off of an up-and-down 2024 campaign. After having a tough start to the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he rejuvenated his season and finished with a respectable 3.46 ERA.
While Perez has become somewhat of a journeyman over the past few seasons, he is still best known for his time with the Texas Rangers.
In his second stint in Arlington, he was a key contributor to solidifying the team's dismantled rotation. He put up solid numbers that led to the Rangers winning the World Series for the first time in franchise history.
After helping the Rangers reach the promised land in 2023, his time in Texas came to an end. He became a casualty of the Rangers' restricted finances and was not re-signed by the team.
After his time in Texas ended, Perez was eventually signed before the 2024 season by the Pirates. Perez struggled initially through the first half of the 2024 season with the Pirates. He finished his brief stint with the Pirates with a 2-5 record and a 5.20 ERA before he was traded to the Padres.
As mentioned earlier, Perez put up a stellar showing in the second half of the season with the Padres and finished his time in San Diego with a solid 3-1 record.
Once the 2025 season begins, Perez will try to be a veteran presence within the White Sox’s rotation. Chicago's starting staff has been one of the worst in the league over the past couple of seasons.
