Prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, it was reported that the Dallas Cowboys were in trade discussions for a wide receiver. Although no player was confirmed in that report, some speculated the Cowboys could have been trying to land Pittsburgh Steelers wideout George Pickens. Nevertheless, Dallas was unable to acquire a receiver before the draft.
That said, on Wednesday morning, Adam Schefter broke the news that the Cowboys were finalizing a deal to acquire Pickens. While acquiring Pickens is exciting for Cowboys fans, it brings about many questions. The most important of which is whether the 24-year-old will be focused on a contract extension, given he's entering the final year of his rookie contract.
According to Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS, a source said, "Pickens isn't looking to do one. He wants to prove he's a top guy this year."
Per source on the need for a possible contract extension following the trade, new Cowboys WR George Pickens isn’t “looking to do one. Wants to show he’s a top guy this year.”

George Pickens Sends Clear Message to Jerry Jones
The 24-year-old, not immediately looking for a contract extension, benefits Dallas in multiple ways. Most importantly, it sends a message to team owner Jerry Jones: Pickens is betting on himself, and he plans to earn his next contract on the field.
That mindset should elevate both Pickens’ performance and the Cowboys’ passing game. The former Georgia standout has yet to fully break out in the NFL, reaching 1,000 receiving yards just once in his first three seasons. While inconsistent quarterback play in Pittsburgh played a role, Pickens also struggled with maturity and behavioral concerns.
Furthermore, Pickens' comments benefit Dallas because the organization still needs to finalize an extension with star pass rusher Micah Parsons. Not being forced to worry about handing a contract out to your new addition right away fits exactly how Jerry Jones likes to deal with contracts anyway.
Jones typically waits until the final moments before extending his players. Pickens taking that option out of Jones's hands means there will be less drama around Dallas in 2025.
Pickens being motivated to prove himself is exactly what the Cowboys need opposite of CeeDee Lamb.
