If there is one position the Dallas Cowboys cannot afford to suffer a further injury at, it is in the secondary. Already, DaRon Bland is out for an unknown amount of time, dealing with a right foot injury. Now, FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano is reporting Trevon Diggs has been downgraded to questionable on Sunday, added to the injury report with a knee injury. Dallas elevated defensive backs Robert Roche and Zion Childress from the practice squad in case Diggs is unable to go.

This makes sense when you consider that Dallas is already down Bland and might be without its best corner as well. It is incredibly frustrating to see Diggs continue to be slowed by injuries in a week the Cowboys badly need to send a message. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' job security is in question due to how this unit has performed. Many of these struggles came with both Bland and Diggs in the lineup.

Cowboys Fans Should be Alarmed Over Late Injury Update at Pivotal Position

Diggs' potential absence puts the possibility back on the table that the Cowboys will allow Caleb Williams to have a statement game. This is a week after allowing Russell Wilson to play at an MVP level, hitting Malik Nabers on consistent deep balls, further exposing the Dallas secondary. If Diggs is off the field, this is a major problem for a unit that didn't do an impressive job of adding depth at the position during the offseason.

With this in mind, it appears that C.J. Goodwin and Reddy Steward will be forced into action based on a complete lack of superior options. This would be the perfect time to bring in Stephon Gilmore or Asante Samuel Jr., who both shockingly remain available as free agents. It isn't difficult to see either veteran making it into the current Cowboys' lineup and being a difference-maker.

Regardless, the addition of either Gilmore or Samuel Jr. cannot make the unit any worse, especially if the Cowboys are going to be without Diggs beyond this week. A knee injury for Diggs is especially alarming when there aren't additional details concerning how Diggs suffered the injury or its severity. For a team expecting to be on the fringes of wildcard contention, this injury issue is a story of incredible importance for Dallas.

In fact, it could demand a deal in the next 24 hours, with the Cowboys quickly being forced into a high level of desperation in what is a surprisingly wide-open NFC. Fans can only hope this is a quick recovery for Diggs and he isn't forced to miss time at a position where Dallas is already struggling.
