The Dallas Cowboys are currently in head coach limbo. Although the team still has Mike McCarthy under contract for a week, they have yet to commit to a contract extension. This has led to an unprecedented scenario where owner/general manager Jerry Jones denied McCarthy the ability to go interview with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

As a result of Jones's actions, fans and analysts are confused about whether the Cowboys want to keep McCarthy or not. Typically, when teams want to keep a coach, a deal is made before their final season. Clearly, that didn't happen here, and yet McCarthy may still have a future with the Cowboys.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy met all day with team officials on Tuesday. However, a person with knowledge of the discussions said there was no word on if the discussion was "good, bad or indifferent."

Cowboys News: Cowboys might have just shown their hand on extending Mike McCarthy

This information throws a whole new wrinkle into the situation. Generally, when team officials have a day-long discussion with the head coach who's been coaching the team for four seasons, it points to a contract extension.

Yet, as mentioned above, this situation is unique even for the Cowboys. Although Jones usually has a difficult time deciding if he wants to keep a head coach, he's never changed his mind publicly so many times before.

Dallas' latest actions continue to show they have an interest in keeping McCarthy. Even so, the fact that it's being reported nothing seemed to come from the discussions that the two parties had on Tuesday is a bit concerning.

If the Cowboys don't make a decision on McCarthy fast, they may very well be stuck with him as head coach. The other teams looking for head coaches have already begun their search, which means Dallas is behind the eight ball if it decides not to keep McCarthy.
