Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont and Mavericks president Masai Ujiri have had no problem cleaning house of any stain from the infamous Luka Doncic trade. That also involved Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who departed from the team Tuesday evening.
The PR statement says it was a mutual agreement, and Ujiri wished Kidd nothing but the best as he was headed out. But for Mavs fans, Kidd's departure may stem from a much bigger issue. ESPN's Shams Charania was on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss Jason Kidd's departure, and he says it goes all the way back to the Doncic trade.
"How involved was Jason Kidd? He wasn't making the trade, but Mavs sources do believe that he had a level of support in that trade."
Shams Charania hints Jason Kidd supported trading Luka Doncic
Ah, yes, the Doncic trade always deserves a mention when we get a chance. After all, it was the worst trade in history, and it's still having aftershocks for people who weren't even in the Mavericks organization at the time.
Charania says the Mavericks are doing the best they can to "wash their hands" of the situation. You can say Ujiri is having that effect, as co-general manager Matt Riccardi walked out the door right after Kidd.
In a press conference, Ujiri made it clear that Kidd's departure had nothing to do with the trade, but fans have no problem holding whoever was accountable on the night of February 1, 2025.
Even before Charania's report, Cuban hinted that Kidd had a hand in the trade, but with Harrison getting ready to finalize everything, his hands may have been tied. If there was only one executive or coach who was rational, someone like Kidd should've vehemently disagreed with Harrison's decision.
Since the Doncic trade, Anthony Davis has been injured in street clothes more than playing, and the Lakers have been playoff-bound two years in a row, while the Mavs have been sitting on their couches watching the playoffs. Kidd's win percentage also suffered without Doncic in the last two seasons, further showing how asinine a trade this was.
Even if Ujiri never linked the Doncic trade to Kidd's departure, he's still not taking ANY chances. They know they have a star in the making in Cooper Flagg, who's about to wreck the league, maybe even more so than Doncic one day.
There's also the question of how far Ujiri is extending house cleanups to the Mavs players. One of those is Kyrie Irving, who is already garnering interest from teams around the league. Ujiri said that he will figure out how Irving fits the program, and the Mavs owe it to the 34-year-old to get him reps with Flagg.
Charania's report hopefully brings some closure to the fanbase. Any blood from the Doncic trade is now washed away, and we're in a new era with a clean slate.
