One of the more interesting decisions still facing the Dallas Cowboys is the future of Jaydon Blue. While the young back is still on his rookie contract, it is clear that he has earned very little trust from the organization thus far. This was evidenced by consistent healthy scratches at the end of last season and only 38 rush attempts across his rookie campaign. For the Cowboys, there is a very real chance they have to make another addition to the offensive backfield despite re-signing Javonte Williams as the clear starter.
Blue is going to learn a lot about his standing with the organization over the next month of the offseason. If the franchise opts not to make another addition, the second-year back is going to have a chance to win a contributing role. At the same time, another signing or draft selection would seemingly push Blue into the fringe as a possible roster cut. Even on a rookie contract, it is clear Dallas has little expectations for a back that averaged only 3.4 yards per carry in his debut season.
With this in mind, Blue can only hope that the Cowboys opt to move forward with Williams as the starter and stick with their current depth. Phil Mafah and Malik Davis are the other notable backs on the roster who would be competing against Blue for a roster spot and the playing time that comes with it. This speaks to the uphill battle Blue is already facing as we move deeper into the 2026 offseason.
Jaydon Blue Will Learn a Lot About His Cowboys Future in April
Understanding the already crowded depth chart helps paint a picture regarding the clarity Blue can gain throughout the remainder of free agency and the NFL draft. If Dallas opts not to add to the position, there is still clear life in the back's career and a chance to compete for the second spot behind Williams or at least win a reserve role as the third option.
However, if the Cowboys were to draft a back in the first two days of the draft or sign a veteran behind Williams, it would appear Blue's Dallas career is coming to a close. The Cowboys would still likely give Blue a chance to win a roster spot, but it would be incredibly unlikely if there were already two clear options cemented in their respective roles ahead of him.
Blue can't help but sit back and hope that Dallas focuses on its defense and rebuilding other pieces of its roster, leaving the running back position as it is currently constructed. Doing so will give Blue his best chance to be a contributing piece for the offense and not see his Cowboys' career come to a frustrating end before it ever truly gets off the ground.
