Jerry Jones Makes 1st Comments on Cowboys' Coaching Future After Week 18 Loss
By Joe Summers
The Cowboys' miserable season is finally over, thankfully resulting in a loss after Dallas tried its best to ruin draft position by winning four out of five games prior to a two-game losing streak.
Jerry Jones spoke to the media immediately following the 23-19 defeat at the Commanders' hands, delivering his first comments on Mike McCarthy's job security now that the campaign is officially over.
McCarthy's contract ends on January 14, at which point any team can negotiate with him, and Jones doesn't sound like he's made a decision on the Super Bowl winner's future. That says more about Jones than it does McCarthy, though it's a problem regardless entering the offseason.
Jerry Jones Offers First Comments on Mike McCarthy Entering Offseason
"Mike's one of the best coaches that I think there is," Jones told reporters right after the season finale. "He was made to coach here because I thought that and he's done absolutely nothing to diminish my opinion of him as a coach."
While praising the players on the roster and the relationships McCarthy has built, Jones stopped short of fully committing to him in the 2025 campaign. He harkened back to his days with Bill Parcells, one of the most legendary coaches in NFL history, though it still feels like Jones hasn't decided whether or not he wants to offer a contract extension to McCarthy.
He has a 49-34 record in the regular season with his tenure with Dallas, having won at least 12 games in three straight seasons prior to this year's 7-9 finish. However, McCarthy's failures in the playoffs are the most important problems. His shortcomings against superior coaches become obvious when the calendar turns to the postseason, and it's hard to argue the Cowboys are in a great position moving forward with him calling the shots.
Regardless, Jones clearly respects the veteran coach and McCarthy has a reputation for handling the eccentric owner well. No matter what happens, it's obvious that Dallas has significant decisions to make and most fans believe that the wrong person will be making them.
