Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is one of the most recognizable names and faces the league has to offer, and to no surprise, he has plenty of thoughts on the outlook of this roster ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.
While many have considered what the Cowboys accomplished during free agency to be underwhelming, the same cannot be said about the brain trust in Dallas' front office as Jones believes that the Cowboys are set up to have a successful draft weekend later this month.
"This draft lets us have a lot of flexibility," Jones said, via ESPN's Todd Archer. "Our roster and where we are in the roster gives a lot of flexibility at every position."
Regardless of the sport, the draft is an inexact science that leads to several surprising outcomes year in and year out. While the Cowboys have been fortunate to have players slip to their draft slot in recent years, CeeDee Lamb in 2020 and again with Micah Parsons in 2021, Jones knows that the work that is done leading up to the draft is what ultimately allows for selections like the two referenced above to be made.
"That's not serendipity. That's just what the draft is," Jones said, per Archer. "You are sitting there and you get an opportunity that if you're doing your job, you thought about all opportunities, you looked around the corners on your roster now and years to come. So all of those things pretty much make it wide open, position[wise], to draft a player."
The idea of selecting the "best player available" is bantered about by almost every franchise once the draft season arrives. Whether he believes it or not, Jones is sending off that exact signal to Cowboys fans and the rest of the league after what his team accomplished in free agency.
"It melds with where we need players," Jones said, via Archer. "You always need a player, so there's no such thing as not being able to lift your roster level. But still, I like the numbers in the areas that are particularly important to us."
Dallas owns the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and barring any further trades will make 10 selections in total. The Cowboys will also make key selections in the second round with the No. 44 overall pick and the third round with the No. 76 overall pick.
Jones and the rest of Dallas' front office also own multiple selections in the fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds as they look to build out a roster that will return the franchise to the postseason for the first time since their loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round of the 2023 NFL Playoffs.
