Jerry Jones Finally Admits Major Mistake in Latest ESPN Mock Draft
By Joe Summers
The Cowboys have significant work to do in the offseason, not only regarding Mike McCarthy's precarious job status but also in terms of the underwhelming roster.
Jerry Jones did a horrific job preparing for a self-proclaimed "all-in" season, though a new ESPN mock draft suggests he could correct the monstrous mistakes of the past. Dallas entered this season with no answer at running back. Luckily, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty is ripe for the taking in the upper half of the draft.
Fans shouldn't ever trust Jones' decisions. Even still, this selection feels like a no-brainer.
Cowboys Draft Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty in New Mock Draft
Jeanty has averaged 7.3 yards per carry this season en route to 2,497 rushing yards and 29 TDs. This has been one of the best years by a running back in history, making him a logical fit for the Cowboys given their vast offensive issues.
"Do the Cowboys have several key issues, including at more premium positions? They unequivocally do," ESPN writes. "But Jeanty is a remarkable prospect, and this Dallas offense is largely bereft of playmakers besides CeeDee Lamb."
Honestly, there may not be a better team-player fit than the Cowboys and Jeanty. Whether or not McCarthy returns, Jeanty is the type of player who can change the entire franchise's outlook.
"The Cowboys are 28th in rushing (91.2 yards per game), and Rico Dowdle -- who has emerged as the team's clear-cut No. 1 back -- is a free agent this offseason," ESPN continues. "Jeanty blends breakaway speed and lateral agility to make defenders miss in the hole and then shows the supreme contact balance to absorb hits to keep on trucking."
Again, you can never trust Jones and his staff. They've proven incapable of prioritizing solid roster-building over creating a circus. Regardless, this is the type of win-win move that would make all parties happy.
