The Dallas Cowboys' season-long spiral continued in Week 9 with a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. With the loss, the Cowboys now occupy the NFC East No. 3 spot with a 3-5 record and only have a 10% chance of qualifying for the postseason, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

With the playoffs looking like a pipe dream, many Cowboys fans are wondering if Mike McCarthy is coaching on borrowed time. The season's halfway point is usually when franchises outside of playoff contention begin to fire their head coaches, proven by the New Orleans Saints firing HC Dennis Allen on Monday following a seventh straight loss.

So, is Jones considering a coaching change before the season ends? The Athletic's Jon Machota shared a telling update to begin the week.

Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Isn't Firing Mike McCarthy

Despite the Cowboys' recent struggles, Jones doesn't anticipate a coaching change in the near future. In fact, he fully supports Dallas' bench boss.

"I’m good with Mike. I know how hard he works," Jones said on Monday, per Machota. "I like his football mind. I know how good he works. He’s got, in my mind, an outstanding coaching record."

One thing that stands out to Jones is McCarthy's relationship with his players. Even if the wins haven't been there this season, the eccentric billionaire is willing to take any positives he can get.

"(McCarthy is) really good with the players. They think highly of him. He’s got a lot of fire in his belly," Jones added. " I like the positives I see... Some of the best coaches I’ve been around, I got to see them when times were bad.”

On one hand, it's easy to see where Jones is coming from. A mid-season coaching change likely won't transform the Cowboys into instant Super Bowl favorites. McCarthy has also shown to be a capable coach in the past, proven by his three consecutive 12-win seasons as well as the Super Bowl ring he won with the Green Bay Packers over a decade ago.

"I’ve had experience of having times when you were questioning and thinking about maybe doing it differently. But I’ve had good experience with staying with it."

On the other hand, it's understandable if Dallas fans aren't thrilled by Jones' response.

The Cowboys have been one of the most frustrating teams to watch on both sides of the field this season. In fact, the team's struggles go further back than just the 2024 season considering how Dallas is 0-4 with a minus-20.5 average scoring margin in their last four home games dating back to the 2023 playoffs.

This season marks the final one on the five-year contract McCarthy signed back in 2020. Even though certain fans would love to see him fired, it's possible that Jones isn't giving McCarthy the axe because he doesn't intend to re-sign him in the offseason.

Either way, it looks like the ball is in McCarthy's hands. If he ends the season on a high note, it sounds like Jones is open to a reunion. If not and the Cowboys' issues persist, he might be coaching his final games in the Lone Star State.

For now, the Cowboys head into their Week 10 showdown with the rival Philadelphia Eagles as the 6.5-point home underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook. Having said that, an upset win would go a long way to prove that McCarthy's staff is more than deserving of Jones' confidence.
