The Dallas Cowboys are still awaiting the debut of rookie running back Jaydon Blue, who has remained inactive through the first weeks of the season. However, an injury to Miles Sanders appears to be an opportunity for the rookie to finally get his shot. Something Jerry Jones appeared to confirm with Jon Machota, reporting that the owner offering it was “more than likely” that Blue would play on Sunday. An exciting development for a team that could badly use a more exciting second option behind Javonte Williams.

Williams has been one of the most surprising developments of the 2025 season, entering Week 5 as the 7th leading rusher. The veteran is only two yards shy of matching the total of Atlanta Falcons star Bijan Robinson, illustrating just what an impressive start it has been. Still, the Cowboys could use an explosive second option that is an upgrade over the limited Sanders. While the veteran back has had a handful of nice moments, it is clear he lacks a needed burst and had a key fumble in Week 1 that helped end the Cowboys' hopes of an upset over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Hints at Rookie Jaydon Blue Finally Making Awaited Debut

With this in mind, the door is very much open not only for Blue to make his debut but to carve out a contributing role. With CeeDee Lamb remaining on the shelf, Dallas would greatly benefit from the emergence of another weapon. The Texas product showed this throughout his college career, perfectly playing off the weapons around him and going well over 1,000 scrimmage yards in his final year with the Longhorns. Blue scored double-digit touchdowns and enjoyed a year that remains underrated.

All leading up to the fact that his Dallas debut is long overdue, even with the emergence of Williams. You spent a draft pick on a potential playmaker and have an offense that is being forced to score 35-40 points a game thanks to the defense of Matt Eberflus.

If Blue can translate a bit of his explosive ability to the next level and give Dak Prescott another outlet while creating in the run game, it is a huge win. One that the Cowboys appear poised to attempt to find this season if Jones can be taken at his word. Considering the pulse of the team and the long list of injuries, it does seem increasingly likely Blue will make his debut against the New York Jets.

Giving fans yet another piece of the offense to look forward to with the unit rolling in the first weeks of the season. Making anything Blue can contribute simply as a bonus, taking away a lot of the pressure surrounding the rookie's debut.
