The offseason has begun for the Dallas Cowboys. This team failed to make the playoffs this season after they went 7-10.

A question that hung over the head of the franchise this season was whether Mike McCarthy would be back on the sideline in 2025. The Cowboys didn't give him an extension and decided to ride it out with him on the final year of the deal.

His contract expires on Jan. 14, officially putting him on the open market, but the Chicago Bears don't want to wait that long. They requested to interview McCarthy but the Cowboys have yet to respond to them, causing a delay in a potential interview, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cowboys News: Dallas Hasn’t Answered Chicago Regarding Mike McCarthy

The Cowboys wouldn't be in this position in the first place if they either parted ways with McCarthy or extended him. They simply don't know what they want to do and look to be half in/half out.

McCarthy has gone 49-35 as the Cowboys head coach, with three straight postseason appearances from 2021-2023. The 61-year-old has a good offensive mind and is a Super Bowl champion. That is enticing to the Bears, who have a young quarterback in Caleb Williams.

McCarthy has worked with Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott, both of who have been successful under him. Matt Eberflus was the previous head coach for Chicago but had a defensive background. The Bears may want to get an offensive mind instead. Regardless, the Cowboys are stalling the process of any potential talks.

They have one week left to figure something out with McCarthy before he officially hits the open market. Until then, the Cowboys have his rights and are using them to sabotage a potential McCarthy interview. Which isn't surprising at all.
