With the Cowboys heading to the Windy City this weekend in hopes of picking up their second consecutive win, there have been plenty of questions surrounding this team's defense and whether Dallas has the necessary weapons on that side of the ball to make a meaningful playoff push.

The results haven't been great thus far. After giving up 158 rushing yards to the Philadelphia Eagles in their Week 1 loss, the Cowboys were lucky to hang on for a 40-37 victory over the New York Giants in Week 2 after allowing Russell Wilson to throw for 450 yards and three touchdowns.

Jerry Jones Says Cowboys Are 'Open for Business' on Trade Market

After making the biggest trade to this point in the 2025 season by shipping Micah Parsons out of town, Jerry Jones doesn't appear to be done wheeling and dealing on the defensive side of the ball yet, if his comments to the media on Friday morning are any indication.

“Absolutely, I’m open for business period relative now that we have those extra picks," Jones replied, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. "We should be.”

Jones is absolutely right about one thing. The Cowboys should be active on the trade market in search of players who can raise the floor of this defense. It doesn't take an expert to see that this group is making the same mistakes over and over. That can only last for so long before wholesale changes must be made.

Whether it is their usage of 2023 first-round pick Mazi Smith, questionable decisions made by first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, or thinking that one successful play makes up for a game full of mistakes. These are not issues that winning teams deal with on a weekly basis.

With the additional picks that Dallas acquired this offseason, Jones has the ammunition to make a big splash on the trade market if the right player becomes available. It takes two to tango, though, whenever trades are being discussed. Just because Jerry says the Cowboys should be active in the trade market doesn't mean that other franchises will be interested in doing business with them.

If Jones can swing a deal for a difference-maker on defense, though, it would go a long way toward helping Dallas return to the postseason this winter. One thing we can be certain of is that the group in place isn't going to lead America's Team back to the playoffs.
