Jerry Jones Teases Return of Another Cowboys Coach in 2025
The 2024 season has been a huge letdown for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. Jerry Jones did a poor job of adding talent to a roster that desperately needed it. Moreover, Jones allowed the Cowboys to continue the cycle of bringing back a lame-duck head coach by not extending Mike McCarthy before the season.
As a result, Jones has made many contradicting comments on whether the Cowboys will bring McCarthy back next season.
Jones shared more puzzling comments during his normal Tuesday morning radio appearance this week. When asked if McCarthy and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer are tied together, Jones said, “In a way, I do. I think you’re beginning to see some of the best [of Mike Zimmer] but maybe the best is still ahead of us.... Mike [McCarthy] has shown that his team can handle adversity.... I give them both high grades this year.”
Cowboys News: Jerry Jones gives a vote of confidence to Mike McCarthy and Mike Zimmer
Jones admitting that he gives both McCarthy and Zimmer high grades this year is downright delusional. Defensively, the Cowboys have looked worse under Zimmer this season.
Last year, the Cowboys defense allowed 3,481 passing yards (13), 1,910 rushing yards (16), and 46 sacks (T-9). This season, the Cowboys have allowed 3,346 passing yards (22), 1,905 rushing yards (29) and 42 sacks (4) with the three games remaining.
In addition, the defense has gathered a lot less turnovers this year. Last season, the Cowboys' defense had 17 INTs, five of which were returned for touchdowns. This season, the Cowboys only have 12 interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown. With the Cowboys' interception luck not carrying over into this season, the defense looks a lot worse.
The other reason for the defense's step back is because they have faced multiple injuries to key starters this season. While Zimmer can scheme around injuries, at some point, the losses are too much to overcome.
As for McCarthy, his offensive play-calling hasn't always been great this season. That said, his offensive talent isn't great, and when Dak Prescott was healthy, he wasn't playing well.
Nonetheless, if Jones decides to keep Zimmer and McCarthy on staff for next season, the Cowboys will continue to be on the outside looking for another Super Bowl victory.
