The Dallas Cowboys will be able to improve the roster over the next couple of days as the NFL draft kicks off. While Dallas' two first-round selections will get a lot of attention, the Cowboys must get some gems on Day 3 if they make the correct picks.
Dallas owns five picks on day 3, and in the fifth round, they could be in a prime position to draft Oregon WR Malik Benson with pick No. 152. And based on how the depth chart looks at receiver, the Cowboys shouldn't let him get past them.
Cowboys Should Target WR Malik Benson on Day 3 of NFL Draft
The Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens as their 1-2 punch at receiver. While they form one of the best receiver duos in the NFL, the Cowboys revealed they won't discuss any long-term deal with Pickens, allowing him to play on the franchise tag next season.
While he'll be in Dallas for the 2026 campaign, there's no telling how things will look after that. Regardless, the idea of adding a playmaker like Benson to the fold this season makes a lot of sense in Dallas.
When examining Dallas' depth chart, the battle for WR3 seems to be between Ryan Flournoy and KaVontae Turpin. They also have Jonathan Mingo, Parris Campbell, and Traeshon Holden as other depth options in the receiver room. While Flournoy and Turpin have flashed at times for Dallas, they could certainly look to get another pass catcher in the room.
Insert Benson, and the Cowboys would add another burner who could take the top off a defense to that rotation. Benson does need to work on the short and intermediate parts of his game, but he can definitely fly. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he ran a 4.37 40-yard dash, displaying his speed.
Benson can track the deep ball well, and his speed allows him to attack defenders on digs and comeback routes. He can even field punts if needed. Last season as a starter for the Oregon Ducks, Benson had 43 receptions for 719 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He also averaged 16.9 yards per reception.
The Kansas native listed at 6'0", 197 pounds, and would certainly compete with Flournoy and Turpin for the WR3 slot. He has tools that will translate to the NFL and would be a nice target for this team on Day 3. Just last year, Lamb missed three games, which forced other guys into action. You never know what injuries will take place, so even being overprepared is always the right call.
Benson is the caliber of player that goes later on in the draft but could make an impact in year 1. The Cowboys shouldn't look over him and would be wise to consider nabbing him in the fifth round if he's still on the board.
