This isn't a great look for Matt Eberflus.

The Dallas Cowboys are searching for anyone and anything that could help turn around what is the league’s worst defense. There doesn’t seem to be an imminent coaching change on the horizon, and there might not be a plausible trade target on the market that could single-handedly change the unit.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told the media to expect changes after the team’s lackluster performance against the Denver Broncos. This could mean anything, but considering how poorly the defensive unit has performed, it could likely spell trouble for a few players not meeting expectations.

Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus need to allow their young guys to step into roles the veterans are struggling in, but one in particular: rookie defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku.

The second-round pick in April’s draft has seen limited opportunities early in his Cowboys career, but has looked promising when given the chance. In his senior year at Boston College, Ezeiruaku finished second in FBS in sacks (16.5), while also tying for the most in school history for a season.

The upside was too high for the position the Cowboys got him at. Halfway into this rookie season, Ezeiruaku has recorded 11 solo tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble. The numbers might not seem gaudy, but he is backing up vets Dante Fowler Jr., Sam Williams, and, at times, Jadeveon Clowney.

Eberflus Continues to limit Ezeiruaku's Impact on Cowboys' Defense

Ezeiruaku ranks as the fifth-best edge rusher since Week 4 according to Pro Football Focus, behind some of the best names in the game: Nick Herbig, Myles Garrett, Chase Young, and Micah Parsons. PFF also has Ezeiruaku as the highest graded rookie edge through the first eight weeks.

It’s on Eberflus and the rest of the coaching staff to truly unlock the untapped potential of Ezeiruaku, especially considering the team’s desperate need for a consistent pass rusher.

The rookie has looked better week by week, and as some of the opportunities for the other guys potentially dwindle, this is the perfect chance for Ezeiruaku to make a name for himself.

The Cowboys have had many misses defensively, especially in recent drafts, but they might have a gem in Ezeiruaku that must see the light of the field more.
