One of the best executives in the NBA world is coming to the Dallas Mavericks as the new Team President and Alternate Governor.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon, the Mavericks have hired Masai Ujiri to that role, and fans should be pumped about this move. This home run hire is more than just a score; it erases the stain left by the Luka Doncic trade and offers a clear vision to move on entirely.
Of course, a big step in that was firing Nico Harrison, and while fans appreciated that, the stain from Anthony Davis was still there. He was eventually traded to the Washington Wizards, but the Ujiri hire signals a total reset. The keys are with Cooper Flagg now, and it's clear that Ujiri is the perfect face to reset the Mavs.

After a six-month search following the firing of Nico Harrison, Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont makes a major splash with his hire of a global basketball giant in Ujiri. https://t.co/F3SUjHcnwt

Ujiri built a winning culture with the Toronto Raptors from 2013 to 2025 and helped bring the Raptors their first championship in franchise history. A large part of that was bringing in Kawhi Leonard for a one-and-done year, but also rewarding his veteran point guard, Kyle Lowry.
As Charania says in the post above, Ujiri has contacts around the world, as he's listed as a "global" icon. Think about all the guys he can bring in around Cooper Flagg to build a serious championship-contending team.
We also have to give Patrick Dumont credit, as he knows DFW is going to boom with Flagg leading the way for the next 20 years, at least we hope so. Of course, no one can predict that far into the future, but Ujiri clearly sees momentum building with Flagg, and this is the perfect pairing of a global icon and a 19-year-old soon-to-be legend.
Of course, the Doncic trade is always worth a mention, but this hire really puts the Doncic trade to bed, and with Flagg as the next face of the city, this was a home run hire at the perfect time to emphasize a winning culture, which was thrown out the door on the night of February 1, 2025.
It's a new day now, and it's a great day for the Mavericks.
