The Dallas Mavericks failed to get Quentin Grimes, and worst of all, they lost him to the Los Angeles Lakers, and now Luka Doncic has another shot with him.
But the Mavericks have another shot at a win in free agency, and that's another 3-point shifty guard in Anfernee Simons. Per Marc Stein, the Mavs emerged as a suitor for Simons, so have Golden State and Miami. It's not the splash that brings back a player like Grimes, but Simons is just as effective.
This would be the perfect signing for the Mavericks to get over their 3-point shooting woes, and he's a nice addition off the bench or as a starter.
Mavericks are reportedly interested in Anfernee Simons
Another Max Christie on the market? Sign me up. Simons is 6-foot-3 and can play the one and the two.
He also has a history of scoring 20 points a game back with Portland in 2023 and 2024. His deep range has always been a threat, as he shot 44 percent from deep a couple of years back.
The Mavericks are already making moves, improving perimeter shooting by getting Santi Aldama and Sergio De Larrea. The rookie will be a work in progress, but he will likely light it up from deep in the NBA Summer League. Aldama will make an immediate impact as Morez Johnson Jr.'s backup.
Adding Simons may even stir a controversy between him and Christie. While Christie has vastly improved year by year, Simons has a history of scoring 20 points per game and of being a full-time starter in Portland.
In Boston, their starting lineup was already set with Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, but in Chicago, his most recent team, he didn't play all that much. He needs a change of scenery, and what better way to do it than playing with Irving and Flagg.
The Mavericks were 26-56 last season. There will be better times with Cooper Flagg leading the charge, but they also have Kyrie Irving. He doesn't have a whole ton of time left, and the Mavs need to capitalize in free agency when they can.
