When former Atlanta Hawks forward Zaccharie Risacher was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, it looked like a slam dunk that the Mavericks traded Ryan Nembhard for the No. 1 overall pick in 2024. He hasn't quite looked like the top prospect as everyone expected, but Mavs fans are hoping his new physique can translate into something special this season.
Risacher is listed at 6-foot-8 and 200 pounds. He's looked like a lanky ball-handler, but after revealing his transformation in the weight room, he already looks much different. It's expected that the Mavericks will take some time getting used to a plethora of new players, but Risacher is a bit different. He was expected to be top-tier NBA talent, but he hasn't been that yet. This new physique could be what makes the ultimate difference.
In Risacher's rookie season, he averaged 12.6 points per game and 3.6 rebounds. As an interchangeable small forward and power forward, he should've been more active on the boards, and that may be where he's trying to change his game the most.
This transformation is exactly what Mavs fans want to see, and only getting in the weight room increases the confidence that the No. 1 pick will be what NBA analysts thought he would be. He's gotten off to a slow start, but he's showing the Hawks they did him dirty.
After the Hawks quickly turned Risacher into a bench option, they made Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and CJ McCollum the main story. The Hawks gave up on him after two seasons, and now, he's got a chance to prove his former team wrong.
The Mavs already have three former No. 1 picks. Kyrie Irving is the oldest of the bunch, but he's still seen as one of the great ball handlers this game has to offer. The Mavs have an underrated group with low expectations, but if Risacher can use his new physique to change his game around, the Hawks will deeply regret this move, especially what they got in return.
The Mavs only had to get rid of Nembhard, and they feel they have a clear draft steal in Sergio De Larrea after the summer league. Losing Nembhard for a former No. 1 pick was enough, but they feel their true addition at point guard is already filled with De Larrea, making the trade an excellent move.
Risacher could explode on the scene with the Mavericks, and if he does, the trade looks even more like a slam dunk and an even bigger gaffe from the Hawks.
