Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman used to throw bombs to Michael Irvin like it was nothing. But the Hall of Fame WR is making Cowboys fans miss Aikman a little extra as of late, and it's something Cowboys fans have been screaming to Jerry Jones about for years.
Irvin appeared on All-City DLLS to discuss Aikman's abilities to be a voice in the front office, as Aikman has been that voice to the Miami Dolphins. A classic Jerry Jones move, not to look for help right next to him, but Irvin said what's on every Cowboys fan's mind about Aikman not being a temporary front-office consultant.
"It absolutely hurts me, it pains me to see that happen, because I know Troy wanted to do that. Troy wanted a John Elway situation here in Dallas, and I know he wanted it, but it's not going to happen."
Michael Irvin reveals Troy Aikman wanted to be in the Cowboys' front office
Since his playing days ended, Aikman has become a head color commentator for the NFL on Fox and now with ESPN's Monday Night Football. He's been the neutral voice Cowboys fans can trust, but there's no doubt Cowboys fans would love to see him take a temporary front office role, even for just a draft.
The three-time Super Bowl champ also revealed on All-City DLLS this year that he was going to be in Miami for the draft. The Dolphins ended up hiring new head coach Jeff Hafley, and while Dolphins fans don't have much reason to be excited for this year, Hafley looks to be the rebuild coach to get the Dolphins back in relevance.
Why won't Jones look in the direction of his legendary quarterback for advice? Having Aikman back, for even a flash, would be nice, but Jones has already made some long-term decisions with his son Stephen, the executive vice president. It isn't like Jones to break his formula to have a different face in the organization.
It's not an Aikman thing. It sounds more like a Jones thing. However, as Jones has gotten older, it feels like he has surrendered some power to his head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, and it hasn't been like Jones to do that in the past.
Outside of helping the Dolphins, Aikman seems content with being in the booth with Joe Buck full-time for Monday Night Football. Cowboys fans have long wanted their quarterback to work for Jones, but if he's going to pick and choose which job he'd rather do, it's draw up routes on TV, not working for an NFL front office.
Cowboys fans haven't seen a Super Bowl since Aikman was the quarterback, but they are waiting for that to change very soon.
