One of the more notable undrafted free agent signings that the Dallas Cowboys opted to make was adding Baylor tight end Michael Trigg. The pass catcher was handed a three-year deal with $200,000 in guarantees. It is a notable total on the higher end for an undrafted free agent, speaking to the level of confidence Dallas has in Trigg to make the team's final roster. When it comes to tight end depth, the Cowboys have an open battle, and the Baylor product could quickly find himself a consideration.

With that said, the reason that the pass catcher slid out of the draft completely is due to a lack of blocking ability. Trigg was a poor blocker at Baylor and was utilized as a pass catcher, finishing with 694 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his final college season. This explains why Trigg is such an exciting addition after the draft and the possible upside the Cowboys see.

If the tight end can find a way even to be a slightly below-average blocking option, a fair expectation would be the tight end making the team's roster. This is due to a 6'4" frame that offers a consistent mismatch over the middle and would give Dak Prescott a great depth target the team could utilize in short-yardage situations.

Trigg simply needs to utilize the next weeks and camp to improve as a blocker and show even a base level of capability. This is the one trait that could prevent the Baylor product from becoming one of the team's surprise preseason stories.

Cowboys Clearly Setting Michael Trigg Up for Chance to Make Dallas Roster

After Jake Ferguson, there really isn't an option for Dallas at tight end that doesn't come with a string of concerns. While this is obviously the case for Trigg as well, it points to the fact that it is a wide-open positional race that lends the prospect a chance to fight for a surprise roster spot.

Working in favor of Trigg is that Dallas could clearly use his size and ability as a pass catcher within the Cowboys' offense. Having such a mismatch would be a fun offensive advantage for a team that already boasts one of the league's most dynamic receiver duos. Having Triggs sitting on the bench as an occasional target would unquestionably be a fun wrinkle.

The focus remains on what improvements the tight end can make to his game and whether enough progress is made in time to make the final roster this August. Regardless, it would be surprising not to see Trigg stick around the organization, whether it is a surprise run to making the team's roster or as a member of the 2026 practice squad, the potential upside is far too exciting to ignore.
