The Dallas Cowboys took a perceived weakness on their roster and turned it into a strength before training camp even opened.

Dallas made waves around the NFL when it acquired former first-round pick George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The rap on Pickens around the league was that his talent wasn't worth the headaches it came with.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has a much different view of the wide receiver now that he is part of the fold in Dallas, and he made that known on Tuesday at OTAs while speaking with the media.

In Schottenheimer's opinion, via ESPN's Todd Archer, the Cowboys added an extremely impressive football player who is "maturing" as a person.

With CeeDee Lamb entrenched as the No. 1 wideout on the depth chart, Pickens gives Dallas just as dangerous an option to place on the other side of the formation. Having both Lamb and Pickens on the field will force opposing defenses to make difficult decisions on how to slow the Cowboys down.

Simply overloading on one side to help against Lamb isn't a worthwhile defensive game plan anymore. If you overload on one side of your coverage, Dak Prescott can simply look the other way, or up the seam to the tight end, and beat the defense that way.

Football fit aside, if Pickens truly is taking the opportunity given in Dallas to show that he has matured as a player and a person, then he will be a perfect fit in the Cowboys' building. You can never have enough talent on your roster, and Pickens is already oozing with potential.

If everything else he brings to the table is on par with what he does between the sidelines, then Schottenheimer and the rest of the brain trust in Dallas have plenty to be excited about.
