Positive Details Emerge From Recent Cowboys Coach Interview
By Jovan Alford
After parting ways with Mike McCarthy last week, the Dallas Cowboys are still searching for their next head coach. The Cowboys have interviewed Kellen Moore, Leslie Frazier, and Robert Saleh for their head coaching vacancy.
On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Dallas is also expected to interview offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for its head coach opening.
Before it was reported that Schottenheimer would be interviewed, Moore was reportedly viewed as the frontrunner for the Cowboys HC gig. But Saleh could be a contender to become the next head coach in Dallas.
On Tuesday, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reported that the Cowboys felt Saleh had a good interview last week.
Over the last two weeks, the former New York Jets head coach has received notable interest in various head coaching opportunities with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and the Cowboys.
Saleh has reportedly received interest from the San Francisco 49ers for their DC opening, where he held that role for four years. The 45-year-old head coaching candidate was fired by New York earlier this season after only five games. Saleh had a pedestrian 20-36 record in his four-year tenure with the Jets.
After being fired by New York, Saleh was a coaching consultant on Matt LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay for the rest of the season.
Dallas was likely hoping to have a chance at Aaron Glenn or Ben Johnson, but it seems like that won’t come to fruition. Therefore, they have to go to the next tier of coaching candidates, which includes Saleh.
It’s been a while since the Cowboys had a defensive-minded head coach. Their last two head coaches were Jason Garrett and McCarthy, both offensive guys. The last defensive-minded head coach was Wade Phillips, who coached the team for four years.
That said, it will be interesting to see if Saleh gets a second interview from the Cowboys, which will be a telling sign of how the rest of this process plays out.
