3 Cowboys on the Practice Squad Who Will Get Promoted in 2023
2. Sean McKeon
I wasn't as surprised as a lot of Cowboys fans seemed to be when Sean McKeon got cut — his role was at best going to be limited to TE4/fullback, and there was both no guarantee we'd carry a fullback on the 53 and also the potential (which came true) that Hunter Luepke took that fullback job.
That made it mighty hard to find room for McKeon on the 53.
But that doesn't mean it will be hard for McKeon all season. His versatility makes him the kind of player that could be up and down between the active roster and practice squad all season.
A tight end gets hurt? McKeon's up. Luepke gets hurt? McKeon's up. There's a gap in certain special teams roles? McKeon's up. A gameplan is calling for us to go very run-heavy and we want some extra blocking at tight end? McKeon's up. Wide receivers are injured and we want to use our top tight ends in the slot or out wide more to fill the gap? McKeon's up.
There are just so many situations where he can offer value that's it's hard to see him staying on the practice squad all year.
He's not the kind of guy who's going to make a super splashy impact, since his contributions come largely as a blocker and special teams option, but those are important contributions none the less.
McKeon played 14% of the available offensive snaps and 44% of the available special teams snaps in the 13 games he played in 2022, and while I don't think he gets another 13 games (unless a serious injury pops up) in 2023, I do think we see him back on the active roster in both of those capacities again for at least a few games.
