Adding Royce Freeman wasn’t the worst idea. He’s never been a featured back but he had 317 yards with two touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. However, he also struggled mightily the two seasons prior with the Houston Texans.

Even with the inconsistent play, he at least offers a veteran back who can work in a committee. They still need to look hard at running backs in the draft and it wouldn’t be a bad move to add another experienced player if they had the opportunity. One possibility would be to trade for Khalil Herbert of the Chicago Bears.

Herbert is a former sixth-round pick who worked in tandem with David Montgomery for the first two seasons of his career. He got the chance to start in 2023 and averaged 4.6 yards per carry but missed five games due to injury.

Entering the final season of his rookie contract, Herbert again finds himself on the bench after D’Andre Swift was signed in free agency. They also liked what they saw out of Roschon Johnson, and might believe he’s good enough to be the primary backup.

If that’s the case, the Bears might be willing to add some draft capital — which they need — to part with Herbert. In Dallas, he still wouldn’t be a featured back but working in a committee with Freeman, Rico Dowdle, and a potential rookie could be enough to keep their ground game moving forward.
