3 Dallas Stars on the Nice List (& 2 on the Naughty List) This Christmas
Naughty List #2: Jake Oettinger
Goaltender Jake Oettinger played a big role in the Stars' 2022-23 regular-season success.
In his fourth NHL campaign, the Boston University product went 37-11-11 with a .919 save percentage, 2.37 goals-against average, and five shutouts in 62 appearances. Oettinger also stopped 26.1 goals above expected en route to finish fifth in Vezina Trophy voting as the league's top goalie.
Despite flashes of brilliance here and there, Oettinger's follow-up act has been underwhelming. The 25-year-old netminder has played to an 11-7-2 record, .901 SV%, and 2.93 GAA with one shutout in 21 starts in addition to allowing 1.3 goals above average.
What's most frustrating is Oettinger's inconsistencies. While he'll go on strong stretches for four or five games, he's also finished with a save percentage of .900 or worse in 11 of his appearances — including in each of his last five outings.
Stars fans know that Oettinger is better than he's shown and it's time for him to turn things around. If he can't do so, this won't be his last year on the Naughty List.
