3 Draft Picks That Could Save Mike McCarthy’s Job
3. Michael Penix Jr., QB
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Cowboys future at quarterback. Dak Prescott is heading into the last year of his four-year contract that he signed in 2021. There were people around the league who thought Prescott was in line for a massive payday but that wasn't the case.
On Mar. 26, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Cowboys and Prescott have a mutual understanding of his current deal and no offers were made.
That leaves a lot of room for speculation going forward on who will be the Cowboys' QB of the future.
An option that Dallas should consider is Washington's Michael Penix Jr. The Florida native doesn't come without some concerns as he sustained two torn ACLs and two shoulder injuries in his collegiate career at Indiana University.
He then transferred to Washington University and revived his career. Penix Jr. has a powerful throwing arm with the ability to thread the needle on any part of the field.
He breaks down coverages with ease and knows where to go with the football. During his time at Washington, Penix Jr. racked up 9,544 passing yards with 67 passing touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
He also had 43 "Big-Time Throws" per PFF. If things don't work out between Prescott and the Cowboys, Dallas would have a fallback option available. Penix Jr. has the skillset to play in the league and Dallas could provide him the opportunity to sit back and learn before taking the reigns.
This could also bode well for McCarthy and allow him to stay in the Lone Star state to develop Penix Jr.
