3 Former Cowboys Still Unemployed Entering Training Camp

2. Jayron Kearse, Safety
Jayron Kearse went from an under-the-radar signing to one of the leaders of the Dallas defense.
A seventh-round pick out of Clemson, Kearse spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Primarily a reserve, he got his first chance to prove he can start with the Detroit Lions in 2020. Kearse recorded 59 tackles and two pass defenses in 11 games but was waived before the season finale.
Added to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad, Kearse spent just under a month there before hitting the open market again. This time, he signed with the Cowboys on a one-year deal — along with Malik Hooker and Damontae Kazee. He proved to be an excellent fit for Dan Quinn's defense, serving as an enforcer in the box.
Kearse recorded career-highs in every major statistic, finishing the season with 101 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, two interceptions, two sacks, and 10 pass defenses. The Cowboys were impressed with his performance and signed him to a two-year extension worth $10 million.
His numbers weren't the same in 2022 but Kearse still played well with 77 tackles, one pick, one sack, and five pass defenses. In 2023, his play dropped off and the Cowboys never showed interest in re-signing him this offseason. They were ready to move on from the 30-year-old and allow Markquese Bell and Juanyeh Thomas to get more snaps.
Kearse hasn't generated much attention but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Quinn sign him in Washington if they have any concerns about their secondary during camp.
