3 Former Cowboys Who Failed Miserably With Their New Teams in Week 1
By Randy Gurzi
1. Tyron Smith, Left Tackle, New York Jets
Maybe failing miserably is a bit of a stretch but the truth is that Tyron Smith looked nothing like himself on Monday Night Football.
Dallas took a lot of grief for moving on from the former No. 9 overall pick this offseason and it was easy to see why. Selected in 2011, Smith has been one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL. There was even a time when his absence meant the entire offense was going to struggle.
Having said that, he was struggling mightily to stay healthy. Dallas no longer wanted to hold their breath every snap, so they decided to let the New York Jets pay Smith. When the numbers came out, fans were furious but in the end, the Cowboys could look brilliant.
Smith faced off against Nick Bosa and was beaten on several snaps. He was flagged for two penalties and gave up four pressures. One of those was Leonard Floyd, so it wasn't just Bosa who gave him fits.
In Dallas, Tyler Guyton also took on an elite pass-rusher in Myles Garrett. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year did record a sack and forced a fumble but Guyton played well overall. He had one penalty and two pressures, proving he could keep Garrett from dominating the game.
Smith will always be remembered fondly for his efforts and will surely be just fine in New York. Having said that, Week 1 was a win for the Dallas front office.
