3. Jayron Kearse
The 2024 free agency class was fairly strong at safety, and while some of the top options are off the market already, there's still a lot of talent available. It's going to be hard for Jayron Kearse to stand out in this crowd.
After showing a lot of promise in his first two seasons in Dallas, Kearse was brutal in 2023. Pro Football Focus gave him just a 44.9 overall grade, which ranked 94 among 95 graded safeties. They also credited him with a 102.3 passer rating allowed when targeted in coverage, and he had 8 missed tackles to his name. Not exactly a good combination for a safety.
With Tashaun Gipson, Micah Hyde, and even Eddie Jackson still available, don't expect Kearse to be handed a starting job anywhere. He'll have no trouble earning a training camp roster spot and competing for a depth role (if he accepts a contract that reflects it), but that's about it.
Prediction: Green Bay Packers
I'm not saying Kearse is going to be the Packers' top choice alongside Xavier McKinney. Like everyone else, I'm assuming they'll draft a safety early.
But bringing in a cheap veteran like Kearse to compete for the role and potentially make a couple of early-season starts while the rookie is getting used to the speed of the NFL game would be a smart move.
