3. Jordan Montgomery

Speaking of great trade additions, that Montgomery guy has been pretty good. He's been a huge stabilizing force in our rotation, helping keep us afloat when Max Scherzer and Nathan Eovaldi went down with injuries and enabling Bruce Bochy to move Perez to the bullpen. All he's done is go 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 10 starts since coming over from the Cardinals at the trade deadline.

Unfortunately, Montgomery is going to be a free agent this winter as well, and he's going to draw a ton of interest. He's coming off one of the best seasons of his career and turns 31 in December, so he should still have several more productive seasons ahead of him.

While there's always the chance we sign Montgomery and bring him back, it won't be easy. Quality starting pitchers are always in high demand and cost a lot of money, so there's no guarantee we'll outbid teams that are looking to aggressively spend this offseason.

And that's alright, because there's a good chance Montgomery gets overpaid. He's a good pitcher, don't get me wrong, but he's never made an All-Star team or won more than 10 games in a season. He's a great No. 2 or No. 3, but he's not an ace.

Similar to Chapman, Montgomery was a great rental who will probably get a nice payday somewhere else this winter, so we should brace ourselves for that.
