5. Deuce Vaughn

Unlike most other players on this list, running back Deuce Vaughn did have a featured role on this team. He began the year as the clear No. 2 between Tony Pollard, earning some nice usage as a rookie thanks to his performance in the preseason.

Yet, Vaughn found success much tougher to come by in the regular season. He turned 20 carries over the first five weeks into just 40 yards, giving him a pitiful 2.0 YPC that didn't live up to the electric playmaking ability he was expected to bring out of college.

That led McCarthy to instead turn to Rico Dowdle as his RB2, which has clearly paid off. Dowdle's aggressive run style complements the more home run-hitting Pollard, giving the Cowboys a nice one-two punch in the backfield.

Dowdle's performance as the No. 2 -- which includes a 79-yard, 1-touchdown performance in Week 10 -- has left Vaughn on the outside looking in at the RB rotation. Dallas' abrupt turn to a passing-centric offense has diminished the running workload even further, so there's simply no reason to make Vaughn active over other depth at more important positions.
