6 Dallas Cowboys on Thin Ice Following OTAs
3. Luke Schoonmaker, TE
Luke Schoonmaker is a prime example of a Dallas Cowboys player who is not on thin ice in terms of his roster standing -- the Cowboys can ill-afford to cut a lot of guys right now. He's an example of someone who is on thin ice due to his need to step up and perform this coming season.
Schoonmaker was a second-round pick out of Michigan last year by the Cowboys, who took a tight end in an absolutely loaded class at the position. It would be horrendous luck if Schoonmaker wasn't a hit as a draft pick because of the fact that Dallas passed on Sam LaPorta in the first round.
Of course, we all saw LaPorta become an absolute star in his rookie year with the Detroit Lions. What could have been...
Aside from just NFL Draft hindsight, the Cowboys really need Schoonmaker to take a step forward this year to provide them with another weapon in the passing game and help boost the running game. The former Michigan star played 368 offensive snaps last year and that number is going to need to go up to at least 500 in his second NFL season.
There's always going to be inherent pressure for players with the second-round label to perform, but the Cowboys got very little out of their 2023 rookie class and Schoonmaker has to step up at OTAs.
