Cowboys at Risk of Losing Stephon Gilmore to NFC Team in Free Agency

The 33-year-old defensive back is still a free agent despite having a good 2023 season with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys had a ton of high expectations heading into free agency as owner Jerry Jones proclaimed that the team was “all in” for 2024. However, that hasn’t been the case, as Dallas has seen multiple players from last year’s team sign elsewhere, and they haven’t done much to replace those losses.

The Cowboys were hit the hardest on defense as Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler signed with the Washington Commanders, while Jonathan Hankins inked a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

Along those same lines, the Cowboys could lose another defensive player who was outstanding in the secondary last season.

Cowboys Rumors: Carolina Panthers Reaches Out to Stephon Gilmore

Joe Person of The Athletic reported Tuesday that the Carolina Panthers reached out to former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore about a potential return to Charlotte. Gilmore, who is a Rock Hill, SC native, spent the 2021 season with the Carolina Panthers.

Gilmore is coming off a tremendous 2023 season with the Cowboys as he stepped in for Trevon Diggs, who suffered a torn ACL in September.

The 33-year-old Gilmore helped Dallas have one of the best passing defenses in the NFL, as he posted 68 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, and two interceptions.

The veteran cornerback also posted a 55.8 completion percentage allowed on targets, an 82.7 pass rating allowed when targeted, and gave up four receiving touchdowns. There was a belief that Gilmore would be back in Dallas, but we haven’t heard much from them as they don’t have a lot of cap space.

The Cowboys might be able to get by next season without Gilmore, but it would be a noticeable loss as he played well on the boundary in 2023.
