In their quest to belatedly replace Amari Cooper this offseason, the Cowboys ultimately settled on Brandin Cooks, acquiring him via trade from the Houston Texans in March.

With six 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, Cooks is a productive, reliable veteran. However, Dallas could have potentially gotten an even bigger upgrade in free agency, if it had bothered to try.

In a news story published on Thursday, superstar wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins revealed that several teams essentially ignored him in free agency this summer. Unfortunately, the Cowboys were one of those teams.

According to Hopkins, he reached out to Dallas to express his interest in signing a deal there, but the team never returned his call, perhaps feeling that his asking price was too high.

If it makes Cowboys fans feel any better, their team wasn't the only one to stiff Hopkins. The other three he mentioned were all in the NFC, including one in Dallas' own division (Giants), so at least he ended up in the AFC with the Titans instead of with one of them.

Still, this has the potential to bet a major what-if for the Cowboys of Cooks flops and/or Hopkins has a monster year. Pairing Hopkins with CeeDee Lamb would've given Dallas an incredible 1-2 punch in the receiving corps for Dak Prescott to throw to.

Time will tell if Dallas ends up regretting not signing Hopkins when it had the chance, or at least negotiating in him. After all, who wouldn't want one of the best wideouts in the NFL?
