5. Trey Lance

Here's a bit of a free square. Trey Lance is not going to overtake Cooper Rush as the Cowboys' QB2 this season, and with the NFL's emergency third quarterback rules that means Lance will never be active.

The rule allows teams to roll with only two active quarterbacks on gameday with nothing to worry about — if the two active QBs are both injured or ejected, the team is allowed to put their emergency third QB into the game even if that guy wasn't on the active gameday roster.

That means the only reason for Lance not to be inactive is if we think he'd get into the game when Dak or Rush can still play, and it's hard to envision any scenarios like that.

Could it be neat to see a package with Lance trying to get our red zone offense going? Sure, but that's not worth devoting an entire spot on the gameday roster to. Lance will remain the emergency third QB while technically inactive, you can bank on that.
