The Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliott have seemed mutually interested in a reunion for weeks. On the eve of the 2024 NFL Draft, the two sides are one step closer to getting back together for the upcoming season.

According to Josina Anderson, a senior NFL Insider at CBS Sports, the Cowboys are currently meeting with Elliott's representatives around Dallas' team facility.

Should all go well, it's possible a deal will be completed in the near future. For a Cowboys team looking to compete for a Super Bowl, shoring up the backfield ahead of the NFL Draft would allow additional flexibility over the coming days.

Elliott almost feels synonymous with Cowboys football, having rushed for 8,262 yards and 68 TDs over seven seasons in Dallas. He's near the tail end of his career after a disappointing stint in New England, though the former Ohio State star is beloved among Cowboys fans and well regarded in the front office.

Tony Pollard is now with the Tennessee Titans and Dallas' thin running back room features Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis. That's hardly a group that inspires confidence, so Elliott could theoretically step right into a starting role for his old team.

Whether or not Elliott can still be an effective lead running back remains to be seen. At this point in his career, it feels unlikely. That being said, he's a better option than any other player on the Cowboys' roster.

At worst, Elliott is a perfect candidate to mentor a young draft pick to one day lead Dallas' backfield. The Cowboys are "all-in" this year, potentially facing massive personnel changes should the team suffer another disappointing postseason result.

If Jerry Jones believes Elliott gives his franchise the best opportunity to succeed, there's no doubt Zeke will once again be the lead back behind Dak Prescott.
