The Dallas Cowboys have begun the arduous process of cutting down their training camp roster from 90 to 53 players. Over the weekend, Dallas wrapped up the 2024 NFL preseason against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Even though the Cowboys lost, head coach Mike McCarthy and the rest of the coaching staff were evaluating a ton of players on the bubble, who could stick on the 53-man or join Dallas’ practice squad.

On Monday, the Cowboys released a couple of wide receivers, who likely aren’t in the team’s plans for this season.

According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Dallas released wide receivers Tyron Billy-Johnson and Deontay Burnett.

Johnson was re-signed by the Cowboys in the spring after they released him in January. The veteran wide receiver didn’t make many plays in the preseason, as he only had two receptions (four targets) for 33 yards, which came in the finale against the Chargers.

The veteran wide receiver spent the 2023 season on the Cowboys’ practice squad after playing with the Houston Texans and Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.

Meanwhile, as for Burnett, he was signed at the start of training camp after wrapping up a spring stint in the UFL. The 26-year-old wideout recorded five receptions (11 targets) for 63 yards in the preseason.

In the Cowboys’ preseason finale, he had three receptions (six targets) for 40 yards. Based on his performance, it will be interesting to see if Burnett returns to Dallas via the practice squad as he has some NFL experience under his belt.

The Cowboys have released 15 players from their 90-man roster on Monday, which means they still have 22 more cuts to do before Tuesday’s deadline.
