Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott has made it a point to attend OTAs, minicamp, and training camp, even though he has yet to receive a contract extension. Prescott is entering the final year of a four-year, $160 million contract he signed in 2021.

However, with the Cowboys set to play their first preseason game on Sunday, Prescott was shockingly missing at the start of Friday’s practice, setting off alarm bells.

Cowboys fans speculated on social media that the star quarterback could get a new deal, which would make sense as Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa received contract extensions. However, that wasn’t the case.

According to Jon Machota, the Cowboys said that Prescott is dealing with some ankle soreness and his absence from practice is completely precautionary. David Moore of the Dallas Morning News adds that Friday’s practice was scheduled as a veteran rest day.

If you are a Dallas fan, you are relieved to hear Prescott isn’t dealing with a serious injury and taking a day off ahead of the team’s first preseason game.

Nonetheless, with Prescott dealing with some ankle soreness, it would be surprising to see him play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Therefore, we could see a lot of reps for Trey Lance and Cooper Rush, which the Cowboys coaching staff and fans are looking forward to seeing.

Last month, Prescott was pictured wearing a walking boot, which set off alarm bells across the fanbase. However, the veteran quarterback quelled the talk on social media and told reporters there’s “absolutely nothing” wrong with his ankle.

With all that in mind, the rest day makes perfect sense for Prescott, who has been a full participant at training camp up to this point. The Cowboys would rather have Prescott ready for the regular season opener than the preseason.
