Former Cowboys Star Defender Reunites With NFC Foe
By Jovan Alford
It took some time, but former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore has finally found the perfect opportunity for himself and will be playing in 2024.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the former Cowboys cornerback is signing a one-year, $10 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Gilmore is reuniting with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who was in New England with the veteran a few years ago.
Former Cowboys CB Stephon Gilmore Signs With Vikings
The 33-year-old Gilmore is coming off a fantastic 2023 season with the Cowboys, who needed someone to step up in the secondary due to Trevon Diggs’ season-ending knee injury.
Gilmore played well on the boundary opposite of DaRon Bland, posting 68 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, and two interceptions. Not to mention, Bland had an excellent season too as he led the NFL with nine interceptions and five defensive touchdowns.
The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback also had a 55.8 completion percentage allowed on targets and only gave up four receiving touchdowns. There was a belief that Gilmore could return for another season with the Cowboys, but that reunion never materialized.
Now the veteran cornerback will look to step in and help a Minnesota secondary that recently lost Mekhi Blackmon to a torn ACL and tragically rookie Khyree Jackson in a car crash. The Vikings also saw Shaquil Griffin go down with a hamstring injury earlier this month.
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported that Gilmore had offseason surgery for a torn labrum and visited with the Vikings earlier this week.
Cowboys fans will watch from afar to see how the veteran cornerback fares with his new team this season.
