Jake Ferguson Leaves With Concerning Injury During Cowboys' Week 1 Game
By Joe Summers
Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson exited in the third quarter during a blowout win over the Cleveland Browns with a concerning injury.
Despite Dallas' massive lead in the third quarter, it appears that Ferguson will miss some time barring a surprise. He's officially questionable to return with a knee ailment, though video of the play suggests his ankle could be a problem as well.
Given the circumstances and the Cowboys' commanding lead, losing Ferguson is a huge blow to the offense amid what should be a celebratory occasion.
Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson Leaves Week 1 With Concerning Injury
Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Ferguson emerged as a key contributor during the 2023 season. He caught 71 passes for 762 yards and five TDs, establishing himself as Dallas' clear starting tight end for this year.
Ferguson only had 15 receiving yards on three catches with five targets before leaving the contest, though he wasn't needed considering how dominant the Cowboys were across the board.
The only thing that could've soured such an impressive victory was an unexpected injury. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. It's unclear how much time, if any, Ferguson will miss, but early signs are discouraging.
Dallas hosts the Saints in Week 2 before a pivotal home matchup with the Ravens in Week 3. Luke Schoonmaker could be thrust into a marquee role should Ferguson miss any games. The Cowboys' tight end depth chart gets perilously thin after Schoonmaker, so all involved hope Ferguson's injury isn't truly serious.
It's still a great day for the Cowboys. They look like clear NFC Contenders, yet they'll still need Ferguson long-term to reach their ceiling as a team.
