Mavericks Lock Jason Kidd Down For The Foreseeable Future
By Jack Gurley
It was announced on Monday that the Dallas Mavericks had extended head coach Jason Kidd's contract for multiple years. It has yet to be reported how many years exactly Kidd's contract has been extended, but it is to be assumed that Kidd will be sticking around Dallas in the foreseeable future.
Kidd is currently in his third year with the Mavericks after replacing his former head coach, Rick Carlisle, who resigned after the 2020-2021 season. Kidd's time in Dallas has been successful overall, with a 140-106 record through his three regular seasons. He is currently in his second playoff berth with the Mavericks, who are preparing to face the OKC Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals.
However, Kidd's greatest accomplishment so far is how well he has managed superstars Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic on the same roster for this past year. When Irving was traded to Dallas last February, many were a spectacle that Irving would be able to fit into the Mavericks culture and was worried that he would bring internal problems to the Mavericks similar to the headaches he brought to the Celtics and Nets locker rooms while he was with both organizations.
Fans and media members' worries about Irving possibly being a locker room cancer have been put to bed throughout this season due to the remarkable teammateKyrie has been while also putting up some of best numbers he has in years. Kidd has a lot to do with Kyrie's flourishing so far in Dallas and has been able to get the most out of Kyrie, which is something that coaches have struggled greatly with since he left Cleveland in the summer of 2017.
Overall, Kidd's management of the Mavericks roster has been exceptional, including the management of Mavs star Luka Doncic, who appears not to have had any serious disputes with Kidd in the past three years. This is quite the opposite of how Doncic and Carlisle's relationship transpired over the years, as the two reportedly butted heads quite frequently, and it was allegedly one of the biggest reasons that Carslile decided to depart from Dallas.
With Jason Kidd locked down for the foreseeable future, this will give Kidd a chance to put his focus entirely on the Mavs's upcoming series against the Thunder and allow Kidd to repay the Mavericks for expressing their faith in him.
